Confident Sober Women
AA, Integrity, and Changing Negative Thinking Patterns w/Erica Barnett
Erica Barnett is a journalist, the author of the memoir Quitter: A Memoir of Drinking, Relapse, and Recovery, and the co-founder of the Seattle news website PubliCola. Erica quit drinking many times but kept falling back into relapse--which she now actually accredits to her recovery. She tried several different things to get sober, including Alcoholics Anonymous, rehab, and cognitive behavioral therapy.
Erica talks about her negative thoughts and preconceptions about AA that created barriers for her early on, and how she overcame them and learned to accept and benefit from how well the 12 step program truly works for anyone regardless of political or religious beliefs. We also discuss how the program helps people develop more integrity as well as make amends.
We discuss negative behavior and thinking patterns, how they still show up in ourselves at times and how to change them. She also shares more about her website PubliCola and we talk about the toxicity of the internet and social media, as well as her struggle to not engage in conflict online.
You can find Erica on Twitter @ericacbarnett and at ericacbarnett.com. You can also email her at erica@publicola.com.
